1. What is Andromeda?

No matter what you think of it, 2025 was the Year of Andromeda. Every serious Meta advertiser knew about this change, was talking about it, and considered how it impacted their strategy.

The problem: Most advertisers had no idea what Andromeda actually is.

This is a problem because it can make you easily susceptible to misinformation and scam courses that claim to leverage some claimed element of Andromeda that doesn’t exist. It’s also a problem because so many advertisers made the incorrect interpretation that Andromeda impacts things that it doesn’t — or not in the direct way it’s assumed.

So, let’s clear some things up about what Andromeda actually is in this lesson.

Meta’s Definition

Meta defines Andromeda in technical terms that sound impressive but aren’t exactly advertiser-friendly. Here’s how Meta defined it in a March 2025 blog post:

Meta Andromeda is an innovative end-to-end hardware, software, machine learning co-designed system introduced in 2024, with Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) and NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchip. This more efficient system enabled a 10,000x increase in the complexity of models used for ads retrieval, the first step in the ranking process where we narrow down a pool of tens of millions of ads to the few thousand we consider showing someone.

If your eyes glazed over reading that list of hardware and software terms, you’re not alone. This isn’t going to mean much to most people.

What it Means

At its core, Andromeda is about retrieval, the first step of ad delivery where the system decides which ads have a chance to be shown. Andromeda isn’t what ranks the winning ads (that’s actually what GEM is responsible for). Andromeda picks the short list of ads someone might see.

Bottom line: Andromeda is Meta’s new retrieval engine. It takes millions of ads, narrows them to a few thousand candidates, and does so in a way Meta claims is faster, smarter, and more personal than before.

If there’s anything I want you take away from this lesson, it’s that Andromeda is ad retrieval.

Why Was Andromeda Necessary?

It’s important to understand the background behind why Andromeda is a thing and what it’s improving upon or replacing. Meta says retrieval became a bottleneck.

That first step is massive. Consider how much this has changed in just the past few years alone. There was a time when ad retrieval was simple. One ad was a single combination of primary text, headline, description, and creative.

But ads now are far more complicated. We’re not just talking about matching the right ads to people these days, but the right version of an ad.

Consider all of the various ways you can generate variations of a single ad:

  • Up to 5 manually-generated primary text variations
  • up to 5 AI-generated primary text variations
  • Up to 5 manually-generated headline options
  • Up to 5 AI-generated headline options
  • AI-generated images and background options
  • Related media options selected from other ads
  • Numerous Advantage+ Creative enhancements
  • Customizations of text and creative by placement

And there are more. There are also enhancements related to site links and turning a single image or video ad into carousels and collections. It goes on and on and on.

What was once a single representation of an ad is now potentially many thousands, if not millions, of variations. The old system couldn’t handle the surge of new ad variations created by Advantage+ and generative AI. Andromeda is Meta’s answer to that scale problem.

Meta says retrieval under Andromeda processes hundreds or even thousands of times more ads than its predecessor. And that’s the key here.

Andromeda is an improvement over the old retrieval hardware and software that weren’t built for today’s scale. Andromeda, on the other hand, was built to handle the thousands of variations that exist now to retrieve the right ad more accurately and efficiently.

So when you hear claims about what Andromeda does, understand these very basic facts. Andromeda is about improved execution. We’ll discuss what it’s not in the next lesson.
