Restriction Period for Political Ads

A restriction period is coming. If you run ads in the US about social issues, elections, or politics, listen up…

Beginning on Tuesday, October 29th at 12:01am PT and ending on Tuesday, November 5th at 11:59pm, Meta will not allow any new ads about social issues, elections, or politics. Only ads that have received at least one impression prior to this period will be allowed to run.

This is not new. Meta has enforced these restrictions during the lead-up to elections beginning in 2020.

Here’s what you need to know…

How the Restriction Period Works

During this restriction period, you’ll only be able to make specific types of edits to ads that promote social issues, elections, or politics:

  • Adjust the bid amount
  • Adjust the budget
  • Edit the scheduled end date

You can also pause and unpause ads during this period. But you cannot make other edits, like changes to creative, placement, targeting, or optimization.

What to Do

Do not wait until the last minute. Running political ads takes multiple steps of approval, and you should expect it to take longer than most ads.

Meta recommends the following:

1. By October 15th, complete the ad authorization process, which includes setting up an approved disclaimer for you ads.

2. By October 22nd, submit your ad or ads for approval. This will give you plenty of time prior to the restriction period takes effect, just in case your ads don’t get approved right away.

Once approved, make sure the ads get at least one impression prior to the restriction period. You will then be able to run the ads between October 29th and November 6th.
