Facebook Page Profile Photo Problem: The Fix

The most popular post on this site is my Reference of Dimensions for Facebook Timeline For Pages. So when any changes are made that I don’t know about, I can expect to hear from you!

I had been hearing rumblings of an issue with the profile photo size, but I confirmed that the dimensions themselves hadn’t changed. I then heard from Erwin Meester of Sociaal Lokaal in the Netherlands who explained the problem.

First, here is Erwin’s image showing the issue. You’ll see that Pages that created interactive designs between their profile and cover photos suddenly noticed something was off…

Facebook Page Profile Photo Cover Photo Design Problem

The issue dumbfounded me since my measurements tell me that the dimensions of the profile photo remain the same (still 160×160). But for whatever reason, Facebook now crops even square photos by default.

If anyone has an explanation for this, let me know. But Facebook decided to not only scale my 500×500 profile photo, but crop it in. This didn’t impact my design, but it obviously would screw up the creative designs of many others.

The Solution

The solution is ridiculously simple.

  1. Hover over your profile photo
  2. Click “Edit Profile Picture”
  3. Click “Edit Thumbnail”
  4. Check the box for “Scale to fit.”

Makes no sense whatsoever. This is your profile photo, not your thumbnail. And it already scaled to a point since the original photo size was 500×500. But this seems to fix the problem.

If you have any issues, see my video at the top.

Whaaaaa… your simple trick did, well, the trick and got my images lined up again. Despite the fact that the “original” image is 180px x 180px – because – oh yeah – you had to have it at least 180px x 180px so that fb could scale it down to 160px x 160px – because sending the original image 160px x 160px would have been far too simple….
to develop an integrated cover and profile image (which, let’s face it – is fun to do) we already had to mess about in photoshop… but we did it – much like mountaineers who climb mountains because they are there – because (as designers) we could.
And – to add further insult to injury – it STILL doesn’t work on mobile….

I feel your pain, Steve! One question… Does Facebook no longer resize the image if you submit one that’s 160×160? I haven’t tried, but I’m curious. This could actually be an improvement, if true, since it would be much easier to get those two images to work together. Still annoying though!

      • Steven

If you try to submit 160×160 picture, the error ‘picture is too small, upload at least 180px image’ appears.
I simply hate them for messing with this all the time.

    Thank you, Jon!

Scale to Fit DID NOT work for me. My profile photo is still covering my Cover Photo. Any ideas?

Great info, however, I’m still having problems with the profile pics not scaling properly.

I’ve taken a screen shot of whats happening to me here http://tinypic.com/r/2nqcwtk/6

I’ve uploaded big pictures, and clicked scale to fit – nothing, I’ve uploaded smaller pictures, and clicked scale to fit – still nothing.

As you can see in the uploaded pic above, in the smaller image it looks ok, but on the actual brand page it’s still not scaled to fit, I’ve tried logging out and back in – nothing, and with different browsers – still nothing.

Please tell me I’m missing something really simple.

Strange. Is the image you’re trying to upload square?

This was driving me nuts all morning until I found your post. Thanks so much. My box for “scale to fit” was already checked, so I had to uncheck and then check it again for it to resize properly. Ah, Facebook. Always keeping us on our toes.

if i recreate the blueprint for this with pixels in photoshop, the profile pic must be “cut-out” of the “overall image” as a 170×170. how do i get around this to upload a 180×180 but without having to increase the 170×170 by 10px and lose quality? help! thanks!

hi. does the profile picture size changed?
I’m working at a new design, and when I printscreen my page and paste it at photoshop to chekc dimensions, the profile picture measures are 180×180 and not 160×160, as it should be.
    any clues? thanks.

  • Clara

Excuse me…. UK FB user here. Your info is now outdated. You need to rectify this. There is NO LONGER the -scale to fit- option on Facebook.
