Big Break for Small Business: Free Facebook Ad Coupon

AMEX Facebook Big Break for Small Business

NOTE: If you haven’t received your coupon code yet, read this update for more information.

I get more traffic to this site from people looking for free Facebook advertising coupons than around any other topic (okay, other than Facebook Timeline for Pages dimensions). Lately, I’ve unfortunately had to send people away disappointed.

Until now…

American Express and Facebook have joined forces in the name of helping small businesses. Enter the Big Break for Small Business promotion for a chance to win $25,000 and house calls from American Express and Facebook branding experts to help launch an effective Facebook marketing campaign.

As tends to be the case with any small business promotion sponsored by Facebook, there’s one additional carrot: FREE FACEBOOK ADVERTISING!

Of course, it’s not as easy as clicking a link to get that free advertising. You’ll need to jump through a few hoops first…

1) Sign Up for the Big Break for Small Business Promotion

Go here to get started. It’s a “three step” process that involves details about your business and why you think you’re worthy of winning $25,000. Set aside 5-10 minutes.

2) Watch Four Videos

The final step involves watching four Facebook marketing videos that you’ve probably already watched before (I have). Set aside about an hour to watch them, or do what I did and allow the videos to play in the background while you do actual productive things.

3) Get the Facebook Ad Coupon Code

A few things here… First, once you complete all of the necessary steps, you’ll be eligible to receive a $50 Facebook advertising coupon code. If you are an American Express cardmember or merchant, you’ll be given a $100 coupon code.

Here, it gets a little hazy. I have an American Express card, but they also push you to apply for the Business Gold Rewards Card. Not clear if you need that card or not. I’m not applying for it.

Additionally, the email I received said that I needed to be a cardmember as of June 19, the day I entered. Entirely possible that the wording of this email is different depending on when you enter.

If you are an American Express cardmember, make sure that you use the email address associated with your AmEx account when you register. Don’t miss that step.

Finally, don’t expect to receive this code until July sometime. It may not even be until the end of July (I received an email that says “before July 31, 2012″). So I hope you weren’t expecting to use it today. I guess that would be crazy talk.

That’s IT!

Okay, that was pretty much a pain in the butt. But I guess the $50 or $100 should be worth it. And if you win the $25,000, well… You’ll consider that painful hour well spent.

Good luck!

I’m going through this now, and it is telling me I need a FB business page.My FB page is designated as Category as “local business and places” do I have to create ANOTHER small business page? Am confused. My page is

    • Jon Loomer

I’m confused by that, too, Nellie. Did you create that page and are you using the same profile to register for the promotion? Not sure why that would happen.

  • Andrew Robinson

I’m glad I checked before ‘the painful hour’…. this is only available for US residents. I live in Australia, so not eligible! What a shame – I was looking forward to the $50 FB ad credit… :-(

    • Jon Loomer

Sorry to hear that, Andrew, I was not aware of this being US only. Will make a note. Thanks for the heads up!

  • Naturally Maid

Where are the videos? I did the 5-10 minute process but haven’t seen the videos.

    • Jon Loomer

You should see them within the page of the final step. Also, you should get an email telling you to watch the videos, complete with a link to that page. Or at least that’s the way it was when I did it!

  • Artūrs Strazds

I completed all steps. Spent about an hour. AND DID NOT RECEIVE OFFER FOR FACEBOOK ADS! ONLY FOR TWITTER! Disapointed!

    • Jon Loomer

Very strange, Arturs. Not sure why you’d receive anything about Twitter. That said, you shouldn’t have received your ad coupon yet. As I mentioned, AmEx indicates you’ll get it by the end of July.

  • Duaine Owings

Finally got an email from AMEX. But no links to watch the video’s? Went back to the enrollment page but no links to watch.

Don’t know what to do next. This is an example of a failed campaign.

    • Jon Loomer

Hey, Duaine. For me, when I go to the app/promotion here…

… it goes directly to the page with the videos. There’s a video in the main body of the page, and under it you’ll see a list of four tabs for all videos.

I agree, though, this has not been a well run campaign! Too complicated, and apparently pretty buggy.

  • Duaine Owings

Hello John: Still confused…here is a screencast that I made to ask you about this:

    • Jon Loomer

That’s odd, Duaine. It looks like Facebook/AmEx think that you never completed the steps. Have you tried different browsers?

    • Duaine Owings

That was the problem. I was using ID-9 and no joy. Went to Google Chrome, hit submit and got the videos. This was weird as I had gotten the welcome email from AMEX but of course this didn’t have any email links enclosed.
      Thanks for the fix!

      • Jon Loomer

Great! Now let me know if you actually get the code. Nothing here yet!

  • Shammie Uyanage

    Is this only for US?

    • Jon Loomer

      It is, Shammie.

  • Graff’s turf

thanks Jon, I always find your posts helpful

    • Jon Loomer

Hey, thanks for stopping by! Glad you found it helpful.

  • Alyssa DellaCamera

Has anyone received an ad coupon from American Express yet? I completed all of the steps a couple of weeks ago and haven’t received a code yet. Has anyone had better luck?

    • Jon Loomer

I haven’t received mine yet either, Alyssa. Frustrating!
