Facebook Timeline For Pages: Recent Posts by Others

This is part of a series of posts about getting set up on Facebook Timeline for Pages.

At the top of the new Facebook Timeline for Pages under the cover photo and apps on the right side are three blocks of content:

  • Friends who like this page
  • Recent posts by others on this page
  • Other pages liked by this page

These blocks give users a snapshot of the page and why it may interest them without having to dig into the Timeline itself. But it’s possible that you don’t want all of this content taking up space that could be filled with your own posts. There is a way to hide one of these blocks.

The second block is the recent posts by others:

It’s an interesting addition that allows you to not only see the eight most recent posts by others, but a quick click will allow you to view more or all within that block.

The potential problem, though, is that it takes up space that could be given to one or even two of your posts. Is it worth it?

Well, that’s up to you. But you can get rid of it.

Go to Admin Panel > Manage > Edit Page > Manage Permissions. By default, Show the box for “Recent Posts by Others” on the top of [Page Name] is checked. If you don’t want it, uncheck that box.

When I unchecked it, an awful lot of valuable room was opened up. Will I keep it unchecked? I haven’t decided. But it would be nice if Facebook gave us an option of changing the number of recent posts by others that are displayed. Showing eight may be excessive.

Do you leave this box visible on your page?3

I’m not sure why, but I do not have the admin panel despite using time line!

    • http://jonloomer.com/blog Jon Loomer

That’s not good! If you don’t have the button at the top right, then you should let Facebook know. There’s a Feedback link in the dropdown next to the Message buttons under your cover photo.

Probably because it’s not for profiles with timeline, only pages with timeline. Wich is bad, because I’d like that recent posts box on my timeline.

  • Kari

Why can’t you set the timeline to show all posts – those by the page as well as others

    • http://jonloomer.com/blog Jon Loomer

This is a really good question, Kari. While there certainly are fan posts on my Timeline, most of them are not showing. But when I go into the Activity Log, there are other posts that appear to be set to display on my Timeline. Yet they aren’t there. Could be a bug, I guess.

      • hni

i also want posts by others as default view …how can i do that ?

        • Niki Kavadatou

Same problem.. I want to be default but I cannot see it at all even if I  click it on admin – page settings

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000160582921 Martin Sach

I am also struggling with the size of the space allocated to the recent posts by others. I’d like to keep it but limit it to the two or three most recent posts by others and I have noticed that others seem to have managed to do this. An example is the CocaCola Facebook page. But what nobody seems to be able to tell me is how they did it!!

    • http://jonloomer.com/blog Jon Loomer

Martin — I’ve found that this simply isn’t consistent. When I wrote this, I had eight recent posts by others in that box. Right now I have four. It’s possible there’s something we don’t understand about the algorithm (it’s dynamic) or maybe Facebook is constantly tweaking. But I don’t think there’s a way to change this.

  • Jabalong

I’m actually looking to do the opposite – rather than hiding posts by “others”, I want to integrate them fully into the Timeline so that they’re just slotted in chronologically among admin posts. is this possible? The value on our page is more the user posts rather than those by admins.

    • http://jonloomer.com/blog Jon Loomer

I personally think this is a bug. The hiding I was talking about was in reference to the box of recent posts in the right column. But I’ve noticed that very few user posts integrate when they’re supposed to be there. You’ll probably notice that if you scroll back far enough you’ll eventually find some user posts.

You may want to send feedback to Facebook as well. Can’t hurt!

the same thing I am looking for… If you find some solution tell me on tcdswl@yahoo.com   .. thanks

        Finally! Thanks for this!

  • Peter

Absolutely agree with Jabalong… I have a FB brand page with 100,000 plus fans and overnight they have been complaining that their posts just dont seem important and we as a community have no more fluidity or party atmoshere. Now I do like some aspects of the new look but I REALLY am concerned at our fans feeling disenfranchised.

For us it was the to and fro of the fans feeling equal as us the brand in starting the conversations and sharing of information… If I am wrong please someone tell me as I am more often than not!

My recent posts by others doesn’t seem to be working. I am getting notifications that people are posting on my timeline, but I can’t see these posts? How do I see these posts?

    • http://jonloomer.com/blog Jon Loomer

I’ve had a couple of alerts like this and couldn’t view the post. Haven’t seen it in a few days though. Definitely a bug.

There is an option under Manage Permissions.

Show the box for “Recent Posts by Others” on the top of HomeStyle Kitchen
Default visibility of posts by others on HomeStyle Kitchen’s timeline:

There is an option for “Default visibility for posts by others” under Manage permissions. I had mine set to hidden. Switched it back and voila – the posts showed up.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=717174553 Larry Jorgenson

      Same here.

  • Anthony Lam

Hi Jon, I cannot see all photos posted by fans under “Recent post by others” in my Fan page. I believe they set the privacy so that only their friends can view it. Even when I check the Activity log, I cannot view their posts at all. In other words, an admin can no longer view all posts by fans now. Any thoughts?

    • Leslie

Did you find a fix for this?

  • missybgirl

How recent is “recent activity”? If someone has not had any activity for 2 years, would their last activity (2 years ago) still show as recent? Or is there a calendar time period that is considered recent?

    • http://jonloomer.com/blog Jon Loomer

That’s a darn good question, Missy! I took a look at some old Pages I haven’t touched in a while, and the Recent Activity box doesn’t exist. Seems to be a month or two before clearing out.

  • hannah

    SOLUTION: !!
ive found the solution! go to your wallpost from the notificatios in the activitiy panel and simply press the cross and clear ” unmark spam ” it got marked as a spam thats why it was hidden!! it appears it was auto marked and prob due to a bug

    • http://jonloomer.com/blog Jon Loomer

      Thanks, Hannah!

  • LisaW

I’ve posted on a business page from my business page, and I can see my post in the recent posts by others box if I am logged in as my business, but not if I logged in from my personal profile and neither can anyone else. Any ideas why?!

    • http://jonloomer.com/blog Jon Loomer

I don’t, Lisa. Typically, this content won’t be picked up by users anyway. But the Page would have received an alert to respond to your post.

  • http://www.facebook.com/777productions Deon Fialkov

I switched off `Posts by others’ as I was so paranoid about people spamming my page with random links, including potential pornography pictures, links , text and hate-speech… With `Posts by others’ off I don’t have to have this paranoia. My fan-page currently has 6000 fans, but I want to be more engaging with them. I do understand that if someone does spam my fan-page I can block them from the page, but only when it happens. If the post is of a negative nature – and it’s not removed quickly – other fans may see it , think that I’m allowing this type of content and share that information with others in a negative light…

    What should I do?

    • http://jonloomer.com/blog Jon Loomer

Deon — I don’t know how bad your spam issue is, but very few people would ever see such a post. I’d check your Facebook Insights, but I found that the traffic to my Page is about 1.5% of the reach of my posts. It’s extremely small. And even if they did come to my page, that doesn’t mean they actually saw the posts by others. Unless the problem is really bad, I don’t think it’s an issue as long as you can react in a reasonable amount of time.

I am having a difficult time on my facebook wall. I have not been able to post links. Above in your example it converts to show the image. All it is allowing me to post is the link. My regular personal facebook works fine. But the one for my page does not. Hope you can help…. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

  • Ankur Sharma

hey friend i dnt want people who dnt like my page to see the post on my page…kindly help me…

  • Deepti

Hi Jon, I know I’m a bit late for a query on this topic, but if you could please help. I’m having difficulty in posting on other’s timeline. When I post something in the Recent posts by others category using my facebook page name, the message gets displayed but my page name does not and neither does my logo. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or it’s a technical glitch. I did try to contact Facebook but as usual, no response from them. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
